Yes, this article really is titled 'Writer's Blog' not 'Writer's Block', although I am experiencing a little of the latter as I try to write my introductory post.
When people hear that I write, many of them will say something about how hard it would be to start a story. Some even continue to say how easy it would be to write a story if it's already been started. In response I usually tell people that the start is the easy bit. Carrying everything through to the end of the story is where the work begins.
I'm experiencing the opposite in starting this blog. I've got loads of ideas to continue with, if I can just get it started. (Also assuming that I force myself to log in and spend time blogging instead of using all of my writing time to bury myself in my current manuscript.)
I love it when I can do that. I get a lot of work done when I can bury myself in my writing. I went on a writing retreat with a fellow writer last weekend. We left on Thursday and planned to stay till Sunday morning. The only work we had to do was related to writing. It was wonderful. We even got an extra day when a snow storm came and canyon roads were slick. (Too bad that day wasn’t as productive as the others.)
One day when we were taking our pool break she asked me, "What if one day we wake up and don't want to write anymore?"
"Uh, hello? Not going to happen." Was my initial reaction, but, of course, that's not what I said. We talked about it and both decided that that 'what if' was very unlikely. We both felt the need to write and agreed that writing was our preferred method of connecting to the world around us. I can’t even imagine my life without writing. Okay, maybe I can, but I don’t want to think about it.
I guess I've been pretty lucky in writing too. I may not be published as of today, but my day job compliments my writing. I'm a librarian and not only do I get to work with books everyday, but my job has grown to include a local writing group. And although the writing group had strange roots when it began a year ago, it's turned out really well. It's nice to think that part of my day job now helps other aspiring writers. Not only do I get to think about writing topics at my day job, but I get to invite other local authors to participate in programs that may help them in their writing careers.
I've always loved hearing about new authors that are finding success, whether that success is simply progress in their writing or finding a niche in the market for their work. It's inspiring to hear about the experiences of others.
So this blog focuses on writing. Exactly what the title of this article says, it's a writer's blog about writing. I hope I'll be able to write posts that will help to inform, encourage, and inspire any writers that happen upon it.
Thanks for taking a look.
