A Full Spectrum of Color
Life is full of colorful stories. Some vibrant and bright, while others are dull or even very dark. There's a story for every shade. The stories we tell are a reflection of that life and color. They aren't always pretty and are often exaggerated, but we connect with them more when we see ourselves and the world we live in (good or bad) or would like to live in (hopefully good) somehow depicted.
I recently saw the play A Behanding in Spokane by Martin McDonagh and absolutely loved it! It's a dark comedy and most of us probably wouldn't want to actually be in the hotel room with the four characters. As I sit in my hotel room tonight, I'm grateful that none of them are here keeping me company. :))
I'd tell you why, but I'd hate to post any spoilers if you haven't seen the play yet yourself. In any case, I'd highly recommend this one to anyone who likes comedy and doesn't mind it being on the darker side.
Below is a scene in which the hotel 'receptionist' asks a very important question all writers should consider and hopefully one which readers will find themselves asking when they start a new book - "Where's a story like that going to go?"
Tomorrow's the first day of this week's writing conference and I find myself asking a similar question, where are all to stories going to go?
